Is Hypnosis Evil or Sinister as Some Say?
Not many people today think hypnosis is evil or sinister. But, there are a few out there with these ideas in their mind, probably taken from 30 year old thriller movies.
Evil, Sinister Hypnosis is a Good Movie Plot
The idea of a sinister hypnotist taking control of your mind is an exciting plot for a movie. “The Manchurian Candidate” with its Presidential politics is always a thriller. In the original thriller made in 1962, a Korean War prisoner was brainwashed and hypnotized to become a political assassin.
Here is Angela Lansbury giving the final post-hypnotic suggestions about the assignation:

A later remake of the title has Gulf War prisoners being brainwashed and hypnotized to carry out similar sinister plots.
But, these and other films take liberties with the truth to make a popular film. Hardly any thriller movie hides itself as an instructional video. That’s not their purpose.
So, what about hypnosis? Is hypnosis evil or sinister as movie producers portray?
Hypnosis Accepted as Valid Treatment
Hypnosis was accepted by the British and American medical associations in the 1950s as an accepted course of treatment. Hypnosis has be studied in clinical settings for well over half a century. There are many conditions that respond well to hypnosis. Modern understand of hypnosis has expanded well beyond the “swinging pendulum” of the movies.
Medical science is increasingly finding that many of our ailments are related to how we think. Our thinking can affect our physical bodies and our emotions in many ways. Using this knowledge can help us remain healthy, active and alert. Neglecting this information can cause early illness, depression, chronic ailments, and more.
Hypnosis in therapy, hypnotherapy, is a cooperative process involving both the hypnotherapist and the client. The client allows the thoughts and ideas expressed by the hypnotherapist to guide their own thoughts to produce a relaxed state. It’s in this relaxed state that the client can accept the therapeutic suggestions of the hypnotherapist.
People have been treated with hypnosis to help with weight loss, smoking cessation, stress reduction, depression, asthma, sleeplessness, lack of concentration, irritable bowel syndrome, and many more conditions. Hypnosis is used in surgery as an alternative to anesthetics, most often in dental surgery and giving birth. It has relieved people of chronic pain, and helped overcome nervous habits such as head scratching or nail biting.
In today’s hectic world, who doesn’t need a little help relaxing, concentrating, and focusing on the task at hand? If you reject hypnosis, you are rejecting a scientifically validated treatment that can help you.
Drugs or Hypnosis?
For many, the major course of treatment involves pharmaceutical drugs. Unfortunately, most prescription drugs have side effects that cause other symptoms or problems.
Hypnosis can deal directly with the deep, inner thought processes that cause the physical or emotional problems. Drugs often hide or cover up these problems. Drugs are a temporary solution because when you stop taking them you are quickly aware that the problem remains.
It’s always better the deal with the cause of the problem because that can elimination the problem for good.
Hypnosis for Change
In one example, a little child was walking to the corner store with her mother. On the way home the child fell and skinner her knee and started to cry. Her mother took a cookie from the bag she was carrying and gave it to the child saying, “Eat this. It will make you feel better.”
The young child’s mind accepted the concept that food will make you feel better. Deep within the subconscious mind, this “rule” affected her life for years, adding weight month by month, year by year. As an obese adult she underwent age regression under hypnosis and was able to converse with the child to tell her that cuts heal naturally and that food does not help you feel better.
This helped break that “rule” and allowed the woman to deal with emotional pains in a more reasonable way. She eventually lost weight and now leads a normal, active life.
If you are ready to deal with the “rules” that have lodged themselves in your subconscious mind and limit and frustrate your success, hypnosis for change is always available.
