Hypnosis for Anxiety
Hypnosis for anxiety has been shown to be effective in a number of studies. Most medical journals focus more on studying pre- and post-operative anxiety. Journals that concentrate on psychology or hypnotherapy look at other areas of anxiety, particularly anxiety associated with test taking.
The journal Pain reported on a study of 60 patients about to undergo elective plastic surgery under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. Patients were randomly assigned to stress reduction intervention or to hypnosis for anxiety during the procedure. Patient behavior was observed by a psychologist and the patient reported on anxiety, pain and perceived control before, during and after the surgery. The degree of postoperative nausea and vomiting was also observed. Results showed that anxiety and pain were both significantly lower during and after the procedure for the hypnosis group even though the requirements for intravenous sedation were significantly lower for the hypnosis group The feeling of degree of control was significantly higher in the hypnosis group. In addition there was significantly less nausea and vomiting among the hypnosis group after surgery. The observing psychologist noted less signs of discomfort in the hypnosis group and the hypnosis group showed more stable vital signs. The study shows that hypnosis for anxiety is superior to normal stress reduction interventions in plastic surgery patients.
The International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis reported on a study of 6 patients who received hypnosis for anxiety as well as training in self-hypnosis on the day of their procedure. Results were compared to 10 patients receiving standard, non-hypnosis, care. Results indicate that the hypnosis patients showed reduced anxiety and pain, reduced need for sedation and improved recovery time.
The American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis reports on a study of 11 medical practitioners who previously had failed their fellowship exams due to anxiety. They sought hypnotherapy to help reduce their test anxiety. They underwent two 50-minute hypnosis for anxiety sessions geared to increase confidence in the ability to successfully take tests. After the hypnotherapy sessions 10 of the 11 passed their examinations and 9 of the 11 reported reduced levels of test anxiety.
In another test anxiety study, the Australian Journal of Clinical Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis compares the academic performance of 44 students who received 4 sessions of hypnosis for anxiety with 50 students who received no hypnosis treatment. They were given a standard anxiety inventory prior to a mid-term examination. The hypnosis group showed a decreased test anxiety and improved test performance. The anxiety reductions were maintained as shown by a 6 week follow-up inventory.
Why is Hypnosis for Anxiety So Effective?
Hypnosis is a dream-like state in which imagery and imagination are active. Suggested scenes of successful operations with minimal pain or of successful test taking with excellent results can significantly impact the thinking of hypnosis subjects. Hypnosis for anxiety will include post hypnotic suggestions of successful outcomes of an event can change the way the event is viewed and the emotions that arise as a result.
For example, the anxiety over an upcoming test may be related to the poor performance on previous tests–also due to anxiety over those tests. Once hypnosis for anxiety addresses your pre-test anxiety, it can be reduced or eliminated and test performance therefore improves. Test anxiety will no longer be a problem for future tests.
