How to Hypnotize
Most people interested in hypnosis want to learn how to hypnotize someone. Learning how to hypnotize is pretty easy and is a skill you can learn quickly.
Hypnosis has been defined in many ways. An easy definition is that hypnosis is a dream-like state, a profound state of relaxation in which the subject focuses on the voice of the hypnotist and is readily able to use his or her imagination to participate in the imagery suggested by the hypnotist.
So, if you want to know how to hypnotize, you need to understand how to lead someone into a dream-like state where they experience profound relaxation and are open to suggestions.
While some people think that the hypnotist is in a position of power, exercising authority over the subject being hypnotized, this is not the case. Hypnosis is a cooperative endeavor between the hypnotist who acts as a guide and the subject who voluntarily participates in the drama suggested by the hypnotist.
In fact, many people have come to the conclusion that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. That is, hypnosis is really comes about as the subject voluntarily follows the hypnotist, whether the hypnotist be someone else or the subject themselves.
How to Hypnotize
Once you learn how to hypnotize, you must work with someone willing to be hypnotized. Cooperation is the key. As a hypnotist, you can say all the right words, but if the subject does not mentally focus on and follow what you are saying, hypnosis will not occur.

You should work with the subject, taking them through the following steps in the hypnosis consultation:
Pre-Hypnosis Consultation
Before you begin a hypnosis session you should discuss the problems the subject is having. You can explore specific areas of the problem that can be addressed with specific suggestions for improved thinking or behavior.
Work with the subject to develop several sentences or even scenes that exhibit new, improved thinking or behavior. You will use these sentences or scenes in the suggestion phase of hypnosis.
Also, talk with the subject about what scenes are particularly restful to them. Explore the scene is some detail. You will use this scene in the deepening phase.
Induction Phase
During the hypnotic induction phase your goal is to get the subject to focus their mind and relax their body. You, as the hypnotist, need to speak to the subject in a calm and relaxed voice. You should speak slowly, but not so slowly that the subject’s mind can wander.
One of the most popular inductions involves progressive relaxation. This simply means that you guide the subject to focus attention toward various muscle groups to get them to relax those muscles. You might start out like this:
“Focus your mind on your breathing. In…out…in…out. You are breathing smoothly, rhythmically. Even, and calm.
“Now focus on your jaw muscles. Relax them. Let them relax so your lower jaw drifts down, relaxed. If your tongue is pressing against the roof of your mouth, let it relax too. Let it drift free inside your mouth, fully relaxed.
“Relax the muscles in your forehead. Feel the relaxation as your forehead becomes smooth and relaxed.”
Progressively bring the attention of the subject to their eyelids, neck, shoulders, back, arms, chest, stomach, legs, and toes. The subject should feel the relaxation throughout the body.
Deepening Phase
After relaxation, there is usually a deepening phase in which the relaxation becomes even more profound. After this phase the subject should feel their limbs become very heavy, or some feel themselves to be floating like a feather.
A popular method of deepening is to “walk” with the subject down (or up) a staircase to a special place of peace. This may be a very tranquil scene or a room that is pleasing to the subject. You might suggest the following:
“We are now going to walk down a beautiful staircase to a wonderful place of peach and restfulness. A place by the ocean with warm sand, the gently glow of the sun and the relaxing sound of the waves.
“Let’s start down the stair case now. There are ten steps and with each step you will become even more relaxed, more at peace. Let’s start now taking step number one. You are quiet, peaceful, and so relaxed. You feel a wave of relaxation causing each muscles in your body to relax even more.”
You continue down the ten steps, each time guiding the subject to relax even more.
When you reach the place of peacefulness you can guide the subject to observe the peaceful elements of the scene.
Suggestion Phase
Now the subject is fully relaxed and is giving attention to the imagery you suggest. It is time to give the suggestions that will help your subject.
Prior to the hypnosis session you should have discussed the problems the subject is having. Along with the subject you should have developed several positive, believable, desirable suggestions that will help the subject. Now is the time to provide those suggestions.
Let’s say your subject has a weight problem. One aspect of that problem is that he or she eats snacks while watching TV in the evening. You might pair watching TV with feeling full and not eating snacks in the following way:
“Now picture yourself after having a nice dinner. Your stomach is full and you feel satisfied. You sit down to watch TV. As you do you feel the fullness in your stomach. You are satisfied with your meal and do not want anything else to eat. You will concentrate on enjoying the TV shows and will not have a desire to eat. You are full, satisfied, and happy.”
Coming Up Phase
Now that the suggestions have been given, it’s time for the subject to return to the normal state of wakefulness. This is often done quickly in the following manner:
“I am now going to count from one to five. When I get to five you will be fully awake, alert, and feeling fine.
“One. You are beginning to come up, starting to awaken. Two. Three. Almost awake now. Four. Five. You are now wide awake, feeling fine. Open your eyes. You are awake and feeling fine.”
