Fear of Success Holding You Back?

Fear of success holds many people back from achieving their dreams. In a competitive world where success means a better lifestyle, fear of success withholds many of the benefits life has to offer.

Why do people have a fear of success? Many think it’s for two reasons:

  • Negative consequences of success
  • Lack of motivation to excel

Negative consequences of success include numerous factors. Often for women, success is seen as a loss of femininity that could result in social rejection.

Both males and females often are concerned that high achievement would engender negative feelings from their peers. Fear of success may also stem from the fear of failure and the desire to avoid the additional responsibilities that success often brings. One of these responsibilities is the expectation of further high achievement.

Lack of motivation to excel encompasses lack of self-confidence, lack of decisiveness, lack of independence, and lack of ability or desire to analyze situations to find solutions.

While we may think that fear of success is a general fear, much like a phobia, it has specific characteristics that can be measured. These characteristics are simply the characteristics that describe negative consequences of success and the lack of motivation to excel.

What Fear of Success Research Shows

Fear of success can be measured is several ways. Zuckerman and Allison constructed a 27 item Fear of Success Scale. Other measures have been tested. And, by using the results of such a test in numerous research studies we can tell how the fear of success affects us.

People with high fear of success maintain a self defeating strategy. They do not attribute any success they have to themselves. They do not point to their own abilities and competencies. They do not admit that they were motivated to achieve success. Success is often attributed to external causes like luck or unusually poor performance by other competitors.

People with low fear of success believe they can control their environment for their benefit and they are motivated to do so. These people also rate their performance at a higher level than those with high fear of success. They also try to maintain conditions under which they succeeded and work to change the conditions under which they failed.

In addition, people who have a choice in their activities and succeed are more likely to attribute their success to their own talents and abilities. Having a choice in your tasks also increased your motivation to succeed. And, among those with high motivation to succeed, having a choice in your activities increases the sense of personal responsibility.
